In our latest podcast Michael Hallissy is joined by Adrienne Webb, Chairperson of the Computer Education Society of Ireland, for her annual TeachNet podcast recording, this time ahead of their 2012 Annual Conference “TEACHnology: merging teaching and technology in schools”. Founded in 1973, the Computer Education Society of Ireland supports the development of methodologies that help to marry new technologies with a sound pedagogy. Organised and driven by practitioners for practitioners, at all three levels of the educational system, CESI promotes the practical implementation of ICTs at school and classroom level.CESI represents the views of a range of professionals involved in mainstream education in Ireland.

In our latest podcast, host Michael Hallissy is joined by Mary Colclough of CRANN, the Centre for Research on Adaptive Nanostructures and Nanodevices in Trinity College, to talk about their new educational package for secondary science classrooms.
The ‘Nano in My Life’ package, for the first time, will bring nanoscience (the study of materials at very tiny dimensions, which is set to become part of the proposed new Leaving Certificate syllabi) to the Irish classroom. It will encourage students to relate science subjects to innovative careers, with exciting and challenging applications. There are seven modules, each using a range of teaching and learning approaches, including video captured at CRANN, designed to engage students and encourage active learning.
In addition to the ‘Nano in My Life’ package, Mary also details CRANN’s poster competition, currently open to senior cycle students in association with the Irish Science Teachers’ Association (ISTA).

Interview with Dr Joan Henderson of educational charity Sólas

In our latest podcast, host Michael Hallissy speaks with Dr Joan Henderson of Sólas, an educational charity based in Northern Ireland, to talk about a powerful new podcasting service they recently developed for primary and secondary students both North & South.
School podcast is a new safe web facility which allows children to plan, research and create podcasts on any aspect of the curriculum, edit, and upload these podcasts to their dedicated school page on www.schoolpodcast.org. Currently the School Podcast service is available for £300 per school, (depending on the size of the school), and this yearly fee includes set up, licence, one full days training on photostory and audacity as well as training on uploading podcasts to the site and back up support. An Irish language version of School podcast is also available at www.tonnta.org

Interview with primary teacher & blogger Joanne Gilmartin
In our latest podcast, host Michael Hallissy speaks with Joanne Gilmartin teacher at Leckaun National School, Co. Leitrim, to talk about the power of blogging in the primary classroom. Joanne is one of the guest contributors in the recently published Enhancing Literacy and Numeracy with ICTs publication which will soon be distributed to every school in country. During the interview Joanne details the collaborative journey her third class pupils undertook in creating their award winning class blog, one that is the subject of her contribution in the new ICT handbook in a chapter entitled ‘B is for Blog’.

Interview with Peter Creedon and Sarah Maher of St Aidan’s Enniscorthy http://staidansps.scoilnet.ie In our latest podcast, John Hurley is joined by principal Peter Creedon and class teacher Sarah Maher of St Aidan’s Primary School Enniscorthy, to talk about their use of the iTouch and iPad in the classroom. The project, now in its second year, explores the use of these mobile technologies in enhancing and improving the learning environment in the classroom. During the discussion Peter details the genesis of the initiative and how it’s rapidly expanding across the whole school, while Sarah talks about her own classroom experience. Currently pupils in St. Aidan's from second to sixth use shared sets of iTouches daily to enhance learning across all subjects of the curriculum using both apps and the internet.

'Teaching and learning for the 21st century' - Interview with Co-author Robbie O'Leary, Principal Sacred Heart SNS www.sacredheartsns.net
In this latest podcast, Michael Hallissy is joined again by Robbie O'Leary, Principal of Sacred Heart SNS, Killinarden, to talk about his new book 'ICTs in the Primary School - Teaching and learning for the 21st century', co-authored with colleague John O'Mahony.
Divided into two sections, section one provides a range of practical advice and strategies for teachers on implementing modern technologies to support teaching and learning in their schools. Section two presents a selection of papers, from twelve guest authors, all of whom have made very substantial individual contributions, in a wide range of areas, to the development of ICTs in Irish education, covering both practical and theoretical ideas.
Funding has been provided by the Department of Education & Skills and the National Centre for Technology in Education to provide one copy of this book for every primary school in Ireland. Additional copies may be acquired from Dublin West Education Centre, 01 4528000.
