Essay Guidelines

  • You should devote between 40 to 50 minutes of the examination time to this question.

  • Answers should be in essay form and take up at least two and a half pages of the answer book.
  • There are 10 poems on the course and students are expected to have studied six in detail. You should refer to at least three in your answer.
  • You should select one poem for detailed treatment in your answer, using quotation.
  • The use of quotation in your answer is important and suggests a good knowledge of the poetry. However, beware of using quotation for its own sake. Your quotes should be brief and to the point.
  • It is useful to support the points you make by referring to critical comment. The best comments are those by Longley on his own poetry. You should try to introduce at least one of the comments from The Poet Speaks page.
  • Be aware of the comparative themes and try to unify your answer through an understanding of how the poems connect. Use the Comparative Poems page for help on this topic.
