ICT and Special Education Needs in Special Schools & Units

Technical Requirements

All our courses require broadband Internet access (Min of 1mb recommended) and participants need to be familiar with using the internet, downloading and installing software.

Course Objectives

Teachers will understand the importance of ICT and assistive technologies for pupils with SEN. They will explore how technology can be used to support development of skills such as cause and effect, early interaction and choice making as well as basic communication, language, literacy and numeracy skills as required by their IEP or differentiated curriculum. Teachers will be introduced to the concept of high, medium and low/no tech equipment with practical examples of each. A range of alternative and adaptive input devices such as keyboards, mice touch monitors and switches will be discussed and demonstrated. They will be made aware of a range of software suitable for use with students with SEN. There will be a focus on content free software that allows the teacher to differentiate educational content and to tailor activities to meet the learning needs of students. Teachers will be able to evaluate suitable ICT devices and resources to use in support of learners needs and to know where to get advice and information to assist in their planning.

Expected Outcomes

Participants will have an understanding of the assistive technologies available to support the education of students with special needs and a range of disabilities. They will be familiar with various hardware and peripheral options for SEN. They will have explored a range of software especially content free packages which can be used to support the students with a particular emphasis on support for basic communication, literacy and numeracy skills. Teachers will have knowledge of effective educational strategies and guidelines for use of these technologies and materials in various educational settings and contexts within their school.

Course Duration

Delivered online, this course can be taken anytime, anywhere between January 13th and May 31st 2014. Participants will be encouraged to engage with course content for approximately 20 hours.
