In Secondary Schools at the moment there are many subjects to choose from for the Junior Certificate Course. This Web page has been designed to highlight Home Economics at Junior Certificate level. Craft Work: This option provides an appreciation of design and craftwork in Ireland past and present. It gives an opportunity to do some research into the making and production of crafts. Craft making in Ireland is being revived. This section of the course may encourage students to develop their entrepreneurial skills.
Childcare: Child development is concerned with the physical, mental and emotional development of a child in a family. The purpose of this option is to help pupils develop a knowledge of themselves and also to develop personal and caring skills.
Textiles: Textiles play an important role in our lives. This option gives an opportunity to develop creativity by studying design principles. Student will design and make an item of clothing and a simple household item.
Food Studies/Culinary Skills: Food studies enables pupils to understand food in relation to health. The purpose of the Culinary Skills section is to ensure that students are capable of completing a range of skills which are necessary to plan, prepare and present food for individuals and family groups.
