Drawing Atomic structures

Simple rules to guide you to draw atomic structures!

1 Begin with the nucleus of the atom - Draw a circle to represent this

2 The protons and neutrons are found in the nucleus - This information is got from looking at Atomic number and Mass number on the Periodic table. Example: Hydrogen has 1 proton and no neutrons.

3 The electrons are found in the electron shells around the nucleus - Hydrogen has 1 electron

4 The first electron shell can hold a maximum of 2 electrons, the second 8, the third can hold up to 18

5 Check the Group number to see if you have the correct number of electrons in the outer shell. The number of electrons in the outer shell equals the Group number.

The atomic structures of the next 2 elements are completed here for you - Complete the exercise by drawing in the next 17 yourself

You are given a helping hand with the first 4!

Helium = 2

Beryllium = 2,2

Boron = 2,3

Carbon = 2,4
