Why Does The Earth Move?
Introduction.
|
|
Before launching into a project like this, it is important for the children
to review what they already "know" about Earthquakes:
What happens in an
EQ?
Are all EQ's alike?
Do EQ's happen in
Ireland? Could they?
What makes an EQ?
For this phase I like to get across the message that there is a great
deal of useful information which is not on the "SuperHighway".
To this end, I would use any available textbook which might offer useful
vocabulary like core/mantle/crust, plate/fault or latitude/longitude
as well as encyclopaedia, atlas, world map/chart/globe, etc.
Another nice introductory resource is a little animation entitled "Plate
Tectonics" at www.brainpop.com...
don't be put off by the technical title - it is accessible, informative
and amusing for this age group. If a computer lab is available the children
can watch it at their own pace and try the associated quiz but, like most
of this project it is perfectly doable in the one computer classroom.
A data projector or TV output would allow the whole class to view it at
once but the piece is short enough to allow them see it in groups.
Introductions over, time for instructions. If you wish to follow the
steps of the project as we reached them chronologically simply hit the
sections in the MindMap below in the number order indicated. If, on the
other hand you're the "free spirit" type then be my guest and
jump in anywhere that interests you but don't forget to come back for
the links at the bottom of the page.
