Famous Buildings of the World

 - a Learning by Discovery cross curricular project.

Project Description:

 This is an example of a project that can be carried out by a group of children from ages nine and over, in a collaborative environment and enhanced by the availability of technological knowledge resources. Guided by the teacher, and facilitated by technology, groups of pupils locate information sources, select relevant factual material and present their findings to an audience of their peers.

Objectives:

to increase pupils' knowledge and awareness of global landmarks, and of their cultural significance;

to facilitate collaborative learning among pupils, in a cross curricular, constructivist context;

to foster problem-solving skills among pupils;

to present pupils with opportunities to develop reading comprehension, vocabulary and oral language skills;

to provide opportunities for integrated follow-up activities in a variety of subject areas;

to demonstrate to pupils how information-rich resources such as CD ROM and Internet technologies can facilitate knowledge acquisition;

to present pupils with opportunities to develop communication skills both socially and technologically facilitated.

Organisation:

1. Whole-group discussion, facilitated by teacher, to explain the project, and so that groups may be organised and topics selected.

2. Once groupings are identified, teacher clarifies for each group what their objectives are, what resources may be used, and how their presentation may be organised and produced.

3. Pupils, working in groups, locate the information and graphic resources they require. Information is recorded.

4. Pupils re-organise and present the information they have accessed for presentation to full group.

5. Pupils present the results of their investigations and discoveries. Each group presents in two ways: hardcopy (printouts) for display, and orally, utilising resources as required.

6. Follow-up activities, at teacher's discretion.
