Information on Webquest

Target class: 6th 

Duration: Children will work on this Webquest for two hours every week for four weeks, which will give each member of the team the opportunity to complete their task. During the fifth week the team members will give their oral and visual presentations.

1. Develop an understanding of the importance of food for energy and growth.
2. Understand the importance of a balanced and healthy diet.
3. Design a balanced and nutritious menu for a younger child.
4. Identify the dangers of smoking on a healthy body.
5. Understand the importance of caring for your teeth.

Social Personal and Health Education
Strand: Myself
Strand Unit: Taking care of my body
Learning Objectives:
1. Exploring and examining the food pyramid.
2. Recognise some of the important nutrients that are necessary in a balanced diet and the food products in which they are found.
3. Realise how increased activity or involvement in physical activities can require increased attention to body care.
4. Explore some of the reasons why people smoke, drink alcohol, misuse any kind of substances or take drugs that have no medical use.

English
Strand: Developing cognitive abilities through language

Strand Unit: Oral Language
Learning Objectives:
1. Present a presentation to the younger classes and answer oral questions put to them on the topic.
2. Converse freely and confidently on their particular topic within the task.

Strand Unit: Reading

1. Retrieve and interpret information presented to them on a website.
2. Read and interpret different kinds of functional texts i.e. menus and recipes.

Strand Unit: Writing
Learning Objectives:
1. Enable team members to write in wide variety of genres i.e. menu and information leaflet.
2. Write for a particular purpose and particular audience in mind.

Art
Strand: Print
Strand Unit: Making Prints
Learning Objectives:
1. Enable the child to make prints for functional uses i.e. poster


Learning Opportunities

The children will come to recognise the advantages of working on the Internet and the vast amount of information that is to be found there. 

The children will work collaboratively and co-operatively in groups. This will promote social interaction between the group members and enable them to assign and adhere to their specific roles.

The children will understand the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and identify factors that may inhibit this healthy lifestyle.

The children will have the opportunity to synthesise the information that they have collected on the Internet and present it via a presentation to the younger class.
