THE VIKINGS WEBQUEST

Suzanne Menton & Orla Murtagh

This Viking webquest was designed for third class.  Taking one step at a time or one step a day, the children could complete the webquest in about a week.  There are also ideas for extension activities for which a longer duration would be more appropriate.  The webquest is designed to enhance the children's knowledge of the history curriculum strand unit - the Vikings.  By engaging in the activities in groups, they will learn to work co-operatively and to share responsibility for completing the task.  The main objective  is that the children will learn more about the Vikings by interacting with the computer and each other, recognising its value as a resource and at the same time, improving their own computational skills.
As the children are in the role of a journalist, while they negotiate their way through the task, there are opportunities for integration with the English curriculum, through engaging the children in the writing process.  They will be publishing their article about an aspect of the Vikings in the "Viking Times", providing opportunities for them to draft, edit, and re-draft.
