| Overview:
Having
taught English as a Foreign Language in Dublin, for a considerable amount
of time I have spent a lot of time teaching Chinese students. Unfortunately
many of them have been victims of racist attacks at the hands of young
children and adolescents. I feel as teachers we are duty bound to
address these issues. "As we approach the 21st Century our aim
should be to provide an environment for the young people in schools which
will build on and actively develop their natural curiosity about others,
which will if you like, stimulate their desire to learn and to share, to
bring into their play their sense that they are players in a much larger
game..to see our cultures and other ways of life in terms of opportunities
rather than threats." (Tom Shaw, Realities for Schools in 2000 AD:
2" (1996 , Pluralism in Education Conference Proceedings) At
the same conference Niamh Bhreathnach, the then Minister for Education said
that a "good educational system must have pluralism at its heart". It
was with that in mind that I first set about this web quest. The
children research various aspects of life in modern day China (and similar
information about Ireland), culture, geography and use it to make presentations,
dioramas, sketches, factfiles, and prepare Chinese food. It is done
under the guise of arranging a party to welcome a new student to the class
(from China). |
