Teacher
Guidelines
These
guidelines are provided to help teachers plan their lessons.
It is advisable that the teacher tries the links/bookings
as near to the classtime as possible. By doing this the teacher
has a better idea about what flights, etc. are still available
and will know what likely reults the students will get.
As there
are numerous links to outside websites, beware of 'pop-up'
windows with advertisements. These are beyond our control.
Finally,
as a lot of the links do open in their own window, encourage
the students to close the window after they have finished
with each website.
For this
project the students will need a folder, preferably with clear
plastic pocket inserts, where they can store their short paragraphs
and any printouts, etc that they obtain.
This project
is in English as the students need a focal point when they
are searching so many German language websites, and also need
to know clearly what is expected of them. It is up to the
teacher how much they want to explain directly in German.

Lesson
1
Bring
the students to the computer room. Ensure they have their
folders, copies and pens. Run through the students page with
them and let them try to book a flight (the first bulleted
task). Give them any vocabulary that they might need such
as arrival/departures/ times/connections/change trains/print/search.
Included
in the student guideline for this task is the option of booking
the flight in the opposite direction. This is just to give
students the practise of working in German. Remind them that
the 'holiday' is for one week (i.e. 7 nights) and that there
are two adults travelling (themselves and one other).
Lesson
2
Continue
as in previous lesson, searching and finding suitable train
connections. This will then lead onto looking for accommodation.
Ensure students are using the German versons of all these
sites.
Remind
them that the 'holiday' is for one week (i.e. 7 nights) and
that they will need a double room as there are two of them.
Again make sure students keep records and printouts for their
folders.
Lesson 3 and 4
The next
section - sights and attractions - should take two classes.
Let the students 'surf' the two main websites (Chocolate Museum
and Phantasialand) as there are lots of things for them to
see and do. Then give them plenty of time on the standard
tourist weblinks given.
Chocolate
Factory: For the events, they should be on the opening page
or under 'Actuelles'. The opening times are at the end of
this page too. Receipes can be obtained in the 'Presseclub'
section. Tours are under the 'Führungen' section.
If you
or the students get lost in the site, simply click on the
logo at the top left-hand side of the webpage.
Phantasialand:
go to 'Park' then 'Attractionen'. Choose something like 'Galaxy'
or 'Wildwasserbahn' as they are popular attractions. For opening
times, etc. choose Informationen.
If you
have time, let the students have a look at the webcam.

Lesson 5 and 6
Time to
eat! Again this could take a lot of time, but the teacher
should guide the stuents through by giving them plenty of
vocabulary. Also the 'wenn' at the top of the koeln.de site
has a direct link to 'Gastronomie'.
A sample
of a restaurant is: City-Express
Lieferservice, where there is even an online menu!
Lots of great practice here (maybe link it to dialogues at
Junior Cycle or Role-Plays at Leaving Certificate Level)
Lesson 7 and 8
These
lessons can be done in either order. Students could start
work on their presentation (using something like Powerpoint)
or their brochure (using something like Publisher).
As a break
the teacher might encourage students to try out the little
quizzes.
When the
final part of the project is complete, students should present
their work to the class.
