This project is aimed at second and third year students who choose Jazz as their General Study topic in the Junior Certificate Music exam. Human aspects of this art form may be lost when the topic is taught from textbooks. By working through this series of related listening, composing and research tasks, the student discovers the origins of Jazz and becomes familiar with the main features, styles, instruments and people associated with the genre. ICT offers a visual dimension e.g. sounds are easily followed on the notated scores with the help of a cursor.

The Internet affords access to images, historical texts, online articles and downloadable music files. There are six lessons, each requiring a minimum of forty minutes class time. The suggested sequence of lessons may be altered if the teacher wishes.

Optional extra assignments and an investigation of the resources page could take a further three hours, not necessarily of class time.
